If you’re a therapist with a website but still wondering why potential clients aren’t finding you on Google, you’re not alone. Having a website is only part of the equation. Google also needs to understand who you help, what services you provide, and where you provide them.
The good news is that SEO for therapists doesn’t have to be complicated. A few intentional changes to your website, Psychology Today profile, and local online presence can make it much easier for the right clients to find your practice.
What Is SEO for Therapists?
SEO, or search engine optimization, is the process of helping your website show up when people search online for the services you provide.
For a therapist, that could mean someone searching for “child therapist near me,” “couples therapy in San Mateo,” “therapist for anxiety,” or “Spanish speaking therapist near me.”
Your website should make it easy for both potential clients and search engines to understand exactly what you offer.
1. Make Sure Every Page Has a Clear Purpose
One of the biggest SEO mistakes I see is trying to fit everything a practice offers onto one page.
If you provide couples therapy, child therapy, trauma therapy, or other specialized services, those services may deserve their own pages. This gives you more space to actually explain your work and gives Google a clearer understanding of what your practice offers.
The same goes for location. If you serve clients in specific cities or areas, your website should make that clear instead of expecting Google to figure it out.
Think about your website from a potential client’s perspective: Can they tell within a few seconds who you help, what you offer, where you provide services, and how to contact you?
Your website structure matters.
A clear website might include a homepage, about page, individual service pages, location information, FAQs, and a simple contact or start therapy page. You don’t need dozens of pages. You need the right pages with useful information.
